Short biography
Sophie Bernard is full Professor of Biomedical Physics at the School of Fundamental and Biomedical Sciences at Université Paris Cité, and conducts her research at the HealthFex INSERM UMR-S 1124 laboratory.
Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the development of microfluidic compartmentalized chips to recapitulate in vitrophysiological relevant models of myelination, demyelination and remyelination. From DRG explants or dissociated neuron cultures growing in the controlled microenvironment of a tailor-designed chip, her team aims to model neurodegenerative diseases, screen drugs and evaluate the therapeutical potency of extracellular vesicles secreted by Schwann cells to induce remyelination and to prevent demyelination.
She obtained a PhD in biophysics in 1996 from Paris 7 University, where her research focused on the development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering to track the fate of antitumour drugs in cancer cells. She conducted postdoctoral research at the Pasteur Institute (Paris) in partnership with Pfizer Research (Connecticut, USA) prior to joining Paris Descartes University in 1999, where she obtained her habilitation to in 2006.
